Jamaica's Wilmot Max Ramsay among Chancellor's Scholars for 1989

Among those accepting awards last night at the 9th Annual Chancellor's Scholarship Dinner [at the University of Massachusetts at Boston] was a former Jamaican Councillor Hon. Wilmot Max Ramsay, who was elected, at age 18, to the Local Government of his native [country,] Jamaica.  Max Ramsay was singled out for his "courage, rare accomplishment in his youth and his seriousness in giving service to his country and also fostering excellent relations with his American counterparts."

Such glowing tributes were conferred on Mr. Max Ramsay by Chairman for the Awards Presentation, Dean Douglas Hartnagel who listed a number of the Jamaican diplomat's accomplishments during his active tenure -- 1981 to 1986.  Max Ramsay, the youngest person to be elected to public office in Jamaica, was, in 1982, honored by the Boston City Council with the City government naming September 27 through October 3, Wilmot Max Ramsay Week.  In Jamaica, a road and a town Square are named for Max.

It is widely felt that Max Ramsay's acceptance of the Chancellor's scholarship award at last night's gala reception brought much drama to the occasion with the audience showing [its] approval with loud and prolonged applause.

Max Ramsay, attired in a dark blue blazer, matching pants with light blue shirt topped with a red and blue striped cravat, appeared conservative and acknowledging his audience with a dazzling smile.

Chancellor Sherry [H.] Penney seemed charmed by her Scholar with the two being snap-shot after an introduction by the Deputy Provost, Prof. Robert H. Spaethling.  Max Ramsay, described as [jovial], it would appear, was having the time of his life, unmatched to any movie role.

Ramsay, who currently works for the UMass/Boston CAS Honors Program, was heartily congratulated by the Program's Director Prof. James F. Brennan.

The gala event was also attended by faculty, other scholarship winners and their families and other invited guests.
